Guidelines For Safe Computer Disposal
Alex Lewey

Technology has evolved over the past decade at a very rapid rate, making the computers obsolete over a very short span of time. Gone are the big white boxes with cathode ray tubes. It is the age of the sleek, flat screen monitors with ever expanding memories and better processors to make our way more easy and more fast than it is now. When things start becoming obsolete so fast, there arises a problem of disposal.

Computer disposal may seem to be a cinch but it is actually far from it. You cannot just go and dump your machine in the landfill, though that was the practice being followed until a few years ago. With increase in the number of defunct machines, governments all over the world have formulated guidelines for safe computer disposal. Reason being that computer contains certain toxic substances which can contaminate the water if they go into the water bodies.

The cathode ray tube monitors contain lead which can harm the environment. Similarly, the batteries in laptops contain toxic acids which can lead to the death of birds and animals. Another vital reason for formulating rules for computer disposal is the fact that although machine does not function as a whole, there are some parts in the machine which are still functional. These parts could be extracted and recycled to make new products. Doing so decreases the amount of carbon emissions and we also end up using less resources from the earth, thereby helping us conserve the environment.

If computer disposal seems to be an uphill task to you, you need not worry. Help is at hand. Sensing an opportunity in the field of computer disposal, various enterprising professionals have set up organizations that deal specifically in the area of computer disposal. To find one near your area, all you have to do is log on to Google and let the technology take over. Once you have contacted such an organization for your computer disposal, the company takes complete ownership of your machine.

It is then the responsibility of the company to sanitize and destroy the hard drives, lest someone may use personal information. The functional parts are removed for the recycling purpose and the rest of the equipments are disposed off according to the prevailing environmental laws. In certain countries, one also gets rebate on new purchases upon proper computer disposal. So the next time you think of doing away with your computer, keep in mind such organizations which do a world of good to the environment, apart from making money themselves. They sure will land up in heaven!
