Pros and Cons of USB Flash Drives
Kamesh Goud

Today's world is becoming smaller and smaller by the day and so are its newly invented products. The recent being flash drives A.K.A jump drives/ Manufacturers have evolved data carriers over the years. Starting from floppy disks to today's flash drives, the purpose has been the same but the size from within i.e. its storage capacity has increased thousand folds from a meager 1.44 megabytes of floppy disks to up to 256 gigabytes (not yet launched for domestic use) in flash drives. Also the external structure has decreased from centimeter to centimeter and has become more handy and portable for everybody's use. But as it is with every great invention there are some advantages and disadvantages associated with it.

PROS

* Flash drives are quite unique in a sense that, they help in quick and reliable data transfers from computer to computer. Files having size as small as 1 kilobytes to files having size as large as 64 gigabytes can be transferred efficiently. * Flash drives also help their users in saving lots of time by their fast data transfer rates. Brands like Transcend, Moser Baer, and Philips etc can transfer data at an astounding rate of up to 30 megabytes per second. * Now-a-days flash drives have become a source of entertainment with an in-built music player and FM embedded into it. Such flash drives help the users in reliable data transfer as well as help them get entertained in their boring periods. * Flash drives are quite useful because of their high reusability factor. One can write and erase up to hundred thousand times into it. But on the other hand compact CD's/DVD's can be burnt only once and on CD/DVD RW's data can be written up to a maximum of 10 number of times. So this high reusability factor makes a flash drive the most liked and used device when it comes to data transfer.

CONS * Nobody in this world is perfect, not even the USB flash drive. This data carrier has some imperfections, the biggest being the loss of data from it. It is a very sophisticated device and demands to be used very carefully. Pulling out a flash drive while it is still in use can hamper the sectors built inside it. * Another major issue is that of security. Many programmers find flash drives as easy targets to place a worm inside it, which eventually land into a healthy system which isn't well protected. * Because of its small size or its miniature structure, it is easily lost by the user if not handled with care.

But all in all USB flash drives are setting the modern trend of fast and reliable data transfer and certainly seems that it has a long way go.
