Installing Windows 2000 Professional

1.  What are the minimum hardware requirements for Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional?

Pentium 133MHz or Higher

64MB of RAM (128 recommended)

1GB Hard Drive (with 650MB of free space to install Win 2k)

2.  Which of the following Microsoft operating systems can be directly upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional?

Windows 95

Windows NT 3.5.1

Windows 98

Windows 3.1

Windows NT 4.0 Workstation

Windows NT 3.5

3.  Which of the above (if any) cannot be directly upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional?  How would you upgrade these operating systems to W2K?  What obstacles are you likely to encounter?

Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.5 must be upgraded (Win 31 to at least Win 95 and Win NT 3.5 to at least Win NT 3.51 or 4) before Windows 2000 Professional can be installed.  Also bare in mind that even though they can be upgraded there may still be hardware and software compatibility obstacles that may need to be addressed.

4.  Describe all the uses of the Setup Manager. (Located on the CD D:\Support\Tools)

The Setup Manager is used to create Answer Files, they are automated installation scripts used to answer the questions that appear during a normal Windows 2000 Professional installation.  Setup Manager in a nutshell:

5.  Name the three unattended installation answer files and which installation method (CD-ROM, Network, RIS, disk duplication) is used for each one.

6.  What is the System Preparation Tool used for?

It is a CD-Based (or Disk) imaging process.  You use the System Preparation Tool (Sysprep) utility to prepare the disk image.  You install Windows 2000 Professional on the source computer with the configuration you want to copy.  This process reduces cost by allowing you to create a master image with uniform policies (standardization) particularly with multiple PC?s with identical hardware, OS and settings.

7.  What operating system(s) can be installed via RIS?

Windows 2000 Professional (there are others but not for this exam)

8.  What three server services/components must be on your network in order to use RIS?

9.  Why does PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) compliant mean in relation to a RIS client?

It refers to a (bootable) boot ROM located on the NIC that allows the NIC to connect to the network.  This is done by sending out a broadcast (discover packet) to a DHCP server.

Request from DHCP server

Offer is made by the DHCP server to extend an IP

Selection is made by the DHCP client to accept the IP offer

Acknowledgment is made by the DHCP server

10.  If a NIC isn?t PXE compliant, what other option do you have to install W2K Professional on a client machine via RIS?

A remote boot disk can be prepared (floppy disk).  This done by inserting a floppy disk into a RIS server (Windows 2000 server) and executing the rbfg.exe command.  Rbfg.exe stands for Remote Boot Floppy Generator.

11.  Explain the significance of the Bootstrap Protocol (BootP) and RFC 1542 as they pertain to DHCP and RIS.

BootP message allows the PC (client) to connect to a DHCP server.  The Boot Information Negotiation Layer (BINL) extensions on the DHCP server redirects client PC to the RIS server.

RFC compliant routers forward discover packets.  If a router is not 1542 compliant, then there must be a DHCP Relay Agent on any server on each network segment.
